Worldbuilding Wednesday 6/24/26: Mouse Magic (Narnia LXXVII)

Though I don’t care much for Reepicheep, the existence of Talking Mice in Narnia raises the question of “What sort of magic would they use?” And what magic might human wizards and clerics use, when dealing with them or with more mundane mice? Though magic is suspect in canon Narnia, in some AUs it might not be, so following is list of mouse magic. It can also serve on its own without Narnia.

Narnian Mouse Magic

Spells Hex of the Nibbler: Causes an enemy to suffer small, distracting bites all over their body, even under armor, as if bitten by a horde of invisible mice. The bites will not kill the enemy, but can disable them for a number of rounds.

Miraculous Freefall: Mice are capable of falling up to 50’ without injury as long as they land on a soft surface. But for longer distances, divine intervention is required. This clerical spell summons a divine being to catch the creature or slow its velocity, enabling it to survive.

Reepicheep’s Challenge: A magically amplified squeak that forces a single foe to acknowledge a Talking Mouse’s presence and honor a duel.

Rodent Rally: Druidic spell that calls forth a large swarm of mice, or other small woodland creatures, that scatter in all directions among the feet of enemies, confusing and distracting them.

Tailguard: Used by Talking Mice when in battle. It creates a protective shimmer around the mouse’s tail, preventing it from being grabbed, stepped on, or cut off.

Whiskerlight: Produces a soft, magical glow from a mouse’s whiskers, illuminating tunnels or dark forests.

Magic Items
Amulet of the Sminthian: Lets the wearer summon, communicate with, and command a single (non-talking) mouse. It’s shaped like a golden wedge of Swiss cheese.

Brightear’s Last Brew: A creation of the Talking Mouse Pipisqueep, known to Humans as Brightear, which was unfortunately his last. He hoped it would let him transform into a Talking Bat, but a small sip of it killed him instantly. Henceforth it became the most powerful rodent poison in Narnia.

Isplandel’s Cheese Knife: A magic knife that multiplies cheese pieces by a factor of two, and even up to 10. Has no effect on other foods.

Map of Many Tunnels: A sturdy piece of parchment that redraws itself when unfolded to show burrows, crawlspaces, and hidden routes suitable for mice (or other small creatures)  in the immediate area.

Reepicheep’s Rapier: Verging on the legendary, this enchanted weapon was supposedly discarded by the heroic mouse in the Last Sea, yet rumors exist that it somehow made its way back to dry land. The sword is usable only for Talking Mice. It is perfectly balanced and never rusts. In addition, it glows faintly when in the presence of treachery.

Wheel of Fortune: A small rodent’s exercise wheel that, when propelled by a pure white mouse blessed by a cleric, generates literal luck for an adventuring team. The luck can be in the form of a clue about upcoming events, raised ability points, or the appearance of money or valuable items.
